Michael Chapman

Michael is responsible for data access within NHS England’s data and analytics sub-directorate. He joined NHS Digital in 2021 and moved to NHS England when the organisations merged in early 2023.

Following a PhD in biochemistry and a brief stint as a management consultant, Michael’s career has focused on enabling the use of data from electronic health records for health research and to improve the quality of healthcare services, and in ensuring that patients and the public are informed about and engaged with this work. He is an independent member of the UK Statistics Authority Research Accreditation Panel, a co-opted member of the Board of the Health Quality Improvement Partnership and is member of a range of other research and data related groups.

Previously Michael has held leadership roles at Health Data Research UK’s Cambridge scientific site, Cancer Research UK, the National Cancer Research Institute and the National Cancer Intelligence Network.
