Female Genital Mutilation Risk Indication System (FGM RIS) Directions 2015

Directions given by the Secretary of State for Health requiring NHS Digital to establish and operate the Female Genital Mutilation Risk Indication System (FGM RIS).

The name has been changed to Female Genital Mutilation - Information Sharing (FGM-IS), from FGM RIS (Risk Indication System), to reflect the change in clinical practice.

Purpose

To support the Department of Health's FGM Prevention Programme by delivering a digital system to strengthen the safeguarding of girls at risk of FGM across the NHS in England. This system will provide the capability for healthcare professionals to record where it has been identified that a girl under 18 is potentially at risk of FGM, and for professionals treating the girl later in her childhood to see this information.

Legal basis

Sections 254(1), 261(5)(d), 274(2) and 304(9), (10), (11) and (12) of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 and Regulation 32 of the National Institute for Health and Social Care Excellence (Constitution and Functions) and the Health and Social Care Information Centre (Functions) Regulations 2013

The Directions came into force in October 2015.

Female Genital Mutilation Information Sharing (FGM-IS) is a national IT system for NHS staff that supports the early intervention and ongoing safeguarding of girls, under the age of 18, who have a family history of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
