Assuring information standards

Understanding the process that ensures national information standards and data collections are reliable and safe.

National information standards and data collections are rigorously assured by the Data Governance, Assurance, and Testing team (DGAT).

We're developing an enhanced assurance service, in collaboration with data professionals across health and social care, to ensure reliable data flows based on our published standards.

This evolution will provide clear roadmaps, enabling health and social care professionals to better plan for future standard updates.

The Data Assurance Board (DAB) provides independent scrutiny and approval for the assurance process.

The process

Our assurance process follows a structured framework with clear criteria, including:

  • resource requirements, benefits, and potential burden
  • clinical safety and testing
  • legal considerations
  • alignment with data architecture

We work closely with development teams over several months to gather the necessary evidence for board approval.

To begin the process, developers should complete a submission form and send it via email [email protected].

Supporting templates

Once our assurance process begins, you may be asked to complete supporting documents. To help with this we have provided the following templates.
