How we use the information (processing activities) | NHS England collects and analyses information about patients who attend NHS funded tobacco treatment services in England. The data will be pseudonymised (de-identified) on receipt and can be linked to other data held by NHS England so that the effectiveness of these services can be assessed to drive improvements in service delivery and understand the impact these services have on reducing health inequalities across society. NHS England will publish aggregate anonymous data dashboards for the purposes of performance management, identifying/promoting good practice and wider learning about the effectiveness of smoking interventions. |

Where does this data come from? | NHS funded care providers delivering tobacco dependence treatment services in England across the following settings: community, primary care, including Early Implementer Sites (EIS), secondary care, including mental health services, maternity and inpatient services. Integrated Care Board commissioned service providers, including community mental health. Independent providers commissioned by the NHS to provide tobacco dependence treatment services across the above settings. |
The legal basis for collecting this data | NHS England is directed to establish and operate a system for the collection and analysis of Tobacco Dependence Treatment Patient Level Data under the Tobacco Dependence Workstream Directions 2021. These Directions are issued to NHS England by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care under section 254 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
