Summary

Dental Earnings and Expenses, 2012-13, provides a detailed study of the earnings and expenses of full-time and part-time self-employed primary care dentists who carried out some NHS/Health Service work in England & Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland in 2012-13.

This is the first year a UK report is being produced for the Dental Earnings and Expenses publication. In previous years three separate reports were produced throughout the year for individual countries; England & Wales at the end of August and Northern Ireland and Scotland in October.

The new structure consists of multiple releases of a UK report that includes data for all countries.

The first UK release on Friday 19 September 2014 was subtitled Initial Analysis and contained high level results for all countries in time to feed into their evidence submissions for the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration (DDRB).

Note:  Table 11.3 in the Initial Analysis report has been corrected as at 31st October 2014 for figures showing the breakdown of expenses for 'All responders' and 'No survey' in Northern Ireland. All other figures in this table and elsewhere in the Initial Analysis report are correct and have not changed. The HSCIC apologises for the inconvenience caused.

This has been followed by a second UK release on Friday 31 October 2014 subtitled Additional Analysis.

There will be further releases containing supplementary analysis later in the reporting year.

The UK reports will contain all information previously produced in the three separate country reports, using the same methodology.

This report has been produced by the Health and Social Care Information Centre in consultation with the Dental Working Group which includes representatives from the UK Health Departments; NHS England; The British Dental Association; and The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers.

An error has been identified in the labelling of section 23 of Dental Earnings and Expenses, 2012-13 Additional Analysis: Report.
Commentary relating to weekly hours worked in Northern Ireland in sections 23.8 to 23.14, tables 23.1 and 23.2 and figure 23.1 are affected by this error which grouped weekly hours worked into <35, 35-44 and =45.
The labelling should have identified these groupings as <35, >=35<=45 and >45 hours.  The labelling in the weekly hours worked rows of table 26.3 was also incorrect.
The labelling in the affected tables and figure has been corrected.  The commentary in section 23 of the report has been updated and the labels in the CSV file (Dental Earnings and Expenses, 2012-13 Additional Analysis: Northern Ireland CSV Tables) have been replaced. 
No other parts of the report are affected. 
The HSCIC apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Highlights

Although the report contains analysis of England & Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, the values are not directly comparable between countries; this is due to differing contractual arrangements in each country as well as the use of different methods to derive dental type in each country.

England & Wales 

  • The key trend for self-employed primary care dentists in England and Wales in 2012-13 shows a statistically significant drop in taxable income due to gross earnings decreasing more than total expenses. This is in line with the general trend since 2006-07.
  • Average taxable income (average gross earnings less average total expenses) for all self-employed primary care dentists (i.e. Providing-Performer and Performer Only dentists) was £72,600, compared to £74,400 in 2011-12,  a 2.4 per cent decrease, which is statistically significant.

Northern Ireland

  • The key trend for self-employed primary care dentists in Northern Ireland in 2012-13 shows a drop in taxable income due to gross earnings decreasing more than total expenses. This is in line with the general trend since 2008-09.
  • Average taxable income (average gross earnings less average total expenses) for all self-employed GDS dentists (i.e. Principals and Associates) was £71,600, compared to £75,800 in 2011-12, a 5.6 per cent decrease, which is not statistically significant.

Scotland

  • The general trend for self-employed primary care dentists in Scotland in 2012-13 shows a drop in taxable income due to gross earnings decreasing more than total expenses.
  • Average taxable income (average gross earnings less average total expenses) for all self-employed GDS dentists (i.e. Principals and Associates) was £68,800, compared to £71,700 in 2011-12, a 4.0 per cent decrease, which is not statistically significant.
  • Earnings and expenses data have been rounded to the nearest £100. Calculations such as percentage change are performed on data that have not been rounded.
