Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) is a record level data warehouse of all patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. It contains details of more than 13 million finished consultant episodes (episodes of care) per year. The Kennedy report recommended that HES should be 'supported as a major national resource' for 'the monitoring of a range of healthcare outcomes'.

Highlights

Between 2003-2004 and 2004-2005

  • an increase in total finished consultant episodes (up by 4.0 per cent to 13.7 million)
  • an increase in day cases of 2.4 per cent and ordinary admission episodes of 4.7 per cent
  • an increase in elective admissions (including day cases) of 0.7 per cent and in emergency admissions of 6.5 per cent
  • the average time waited decreased to 84.0 days from 94.9 days
  • a decrease in average length of stay from 7.4 days to 7.1, continuing the long-term trend.

General and acute admissions decreased by 1.3 per cent for elective and increased by 5.5 per cent for non-elective admissions. In comparison, the Monthly Monitoring returns estimates increased by 2.0 per cent and 5.2 per cent for elective and non-elective admissions respectively.
