Summary

This report details the investment in General Practice and the reimbursement of drugs dispensed in General Practices from 2011/12 to 2015/16.

The report draws on information obtained from country level financial monitoring reports discussed by the Technical Steering Committee (TSC), which is chaired by NHS Digital (the new trading name of the Health and Social Care Information Centre) and has representation from the UK Health Departments, NHS Employers, NHS England and the British Medical Association (BMA).

The figures include some funding - for example for Information Management and Technology, GP practice systems and Out of Hours services - that contributes towards Primary Medical Care investment but does not reach individual General Practices.

Investment in APMS and 'Other' (Non-GMS or PCTMS) contract types are included in this report.

Highlights


For the period 2015/16 the total investment in General Practice including the reimbursement of drugs dispensed in General Practices was:   • £9,455.4m in England, compared to £9,029.1m in 2014/15 (an increase of 4.72 per cent)


• £488.3m in Wales, compared to £478.1m in 2014/15 (an increase of 2.15 per cent)


• £266.8m in Northern Ireland, compared to £255.2m in 2014/15 (an increase of 4.52 per cent)


• £822.3m in Scotland, compared to £809.9m in 2014/15 (an increase of 1.53 per cent)


• £11,032.8m in the UK, compared to £10,572.3m in 2014/15 (an increase of 4.36 per cent)   A summary of the GMS contract uplift from 2004/05 to 2015/16 is provided for reference purposes.
