Complications and Mortality Outcomes dashboard, 2009-2023
Audit, Survey, Other reports and statistics
Summary
The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) provides a comprehensive view of diabetes care in England and Wales. It measures the effectiveness of diabetes healthcare against National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Clinical Guidelines and NICE Quality Standards.
The Complications and Mortality Outcomes dashboard provides trends in rates of outcomes over time broken down by various demographics for each complication/outcome and diabetes type - using data from the NDA, Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Where data is available on complications/outcomes for people without diabetes, risk ratios are also provided for trend analysis purposes comparing the risk for people with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) against the risk for people without diabetes over time.
Highlights
Results are shown for England and Wales for calendar years 2009 to 2023 by total, country, region, integrated care board (ICB) and local health board (LHB), split by diabetes type, sex and demographics (age group, deprivation, diabetes duration and ethnicity).
The dashboard identifies risk rates and trends of long term complications and outcomes of diabetes.
Results are available for the following complications:
- Angina
- Chronic kidney disease
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Heart failure
- Lower limb amputation
- Myocardial infarction
- Renal replacement therapy
- Stroke
The dashboard also shows mortality rates by cause of death and deaths within 1 year of hospital admission.
Death by general cause is available for the following groups:
- Any cause
- Cardiovascular disease
- Cancer
Deaths within 1 year of hospital admission are available for the following complications:
- Angina
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Heart failure
- Myocardial infarction
- Stroke
The data files which support the dashboard can be downloaded from the 'Resources' section of this page.
Disclosure control has been applied to mitigate the risk of patient identification. Zeros are reported, and all numbers are rounded to the nearest 5, unless the number is 1 to 7, in which case it is rounded to 5. This allows for more granular data to be made available. Rounded numbers are used to calculate percentages therefore numbers may not sum as expected. Percentages are not calculated where the rounded denominator is 20 or less, and where numbers are small percentages are volatile and should be treated with caution.
Notes
1. Unlike the previous Complications and Mortality Outcomes dashboard covering 2009 to 2020, annual rates are reported simply as events per 1,000 people; person years at risk are not used as the denominator.
2. Results have not been standardised for age, sex or any other demographic characteristics. Unstandardised trend data should be interpreted with caution because population characteristics may change over time.
