This is a report on deliveries in English NHS hospitals. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2016.   The data are taken from the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse. HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. This publication shows the number of delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by the woman's age, delivery method and place of delivery.

The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This document will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England.

Highlights

• There were 648,107 deliveries in NHS hospitals during 2015-16, an increase of 1.8 per cent from 2014-15.
• The number of deliveries for mothers aged under 20 has almost halved over the last ten years, from 43,572 deliveries in 2005-06 to 22,032 in 2015-16.
• The number of deliveries for mothers aged 40 years and over has risen from 20,530 in 2005-06 to 24,942 in 2015-16, an increase of 21.5 per cent.
• The proportion of spontaneous deliveries has dropped from 64.8 per cent in 2005-06 to 60.0 per cent in 2015-16. Caesarean deliveries increased from 24.1 per cent to 27.1 per cent in the same period.
