Update 2 March 2023: Following the merger of NHS Digital and NHS England on 1st February 2023 we are reviewing the future presentation of the NHS Outcomes Framework indicators. As part of this review, the annual publication which was due to be released in March 2023 has been delayed. Further announcements about this dataset will be made on this page in due course.
This indicator measures how many young people (aged 0-18 inclusive) who have asthma, diabetes or epilepsy are admitted to hospital in an emergency.
This outcome is concerned with how successfully the NHS manages to reduce avoidable emergency admissions for children with asthma, diabetes or epilepsy. These three conditions were chosen as they account for around 94 per cent of emergency admissions for children (under 19s) with long-term conditions.
March 2022 - An error has been identified which affects the 2019/20 Lower tier local authority data for this indicator, originally published in February 2021. The data for this breakdown has been removed from the Excel and csv data files. Furthermore, 2020/21 Lower tier local authority data is not being published on 17 March 2022 as originally planned. It will now be released together with revised 2019/20 Lower tier local authority data once the issue has been investigated and resolved. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to have an impact on Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data late in the 2019/20 financial year, which continued into the 2020/21 financial year. This means we are seeing different patterns in the submitted data, for example, fewer patients being admitted to hospital, and therefore statistics which contain data from this period should be interpreted with care.
