Summary

This topic of interest allows users to examine patient engagement with PROMs by socio-economic and demographic characteristics, procedure type and self-reported pre-operative health (for those who complete a pre-operative questionnaire), at national and Local Area Team (LAT) level. Patients who had an episode in 2012-13 are grouped into three 'engagement' categories:

  • Respondents - who have completed both a pre- and post-operative questionnaire;
  • Participants - who have completed a pre-operative questionnaire only;
  • Non-participants - patients who have undergone a PROMs-eligible procedure but for whom no questionnaire data is available.

The analysis presented here is based on 2012-13 finalised data (published on 14 August 2014). Users should note that participation and response rates shown in this special topic will be lower than those shown in our regular publications as they are calculated on a different basis. This topic is only concerned with questionnaires that link to an episode within 2012-13, whereas our regular publications include all questionnaires whether they link to an episode or not.

Highlights

The chart below summarises England-level differences in engagement with PROMs by age band, gender, white/BME split and Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) decile.

At a national level, this analysis shows that:

  • The proportion of patients who are respondents increases with age to the 65-74 age band, decreasing again thereafter;
  • Proportionally more men (44.8 per cent) than women (37.8 per cent) were non-participants; - Proportionally more white patients (45.8 per cent) than BME patients (28.6 per cent) completed both the pre- and post-operative questionnaires;
  • The proportion of patients completing both the pre- and post- operative questionnaires is lowest among those experiencing high levels of deprivation (decile 1 on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation) and highest amongst those experiencing the least deprivation; --
  • More than two thirds of patients undergoing hip (68.9 per cent) or knee replacements (67.9 per cent) engage with PROMs, completing at least the pre-operative questionnaire. Participation levels are lower for groin hernia and varicose vein patients, with fewer than half of patients completing a pre-operative questionnaire (44.9 per cent and 34.7 respectively);
  • On average, patients completing both pre- and post-operative questionnaires reported better pre-operative health than those completing the pre-operative questionnaire only.
