Summary

Please note: on 26 November 2013 an updated version of the report was uploaded to correct an error in the data presented for England in Table 3 of the report. All SHA figures in this table were correct and remain the same. This was due to a production error by the HSCIC.

This report compares expenditure between primary and secondary care in total and for selected areas, including medicines positively appraised by NICE. The specific area covered this year are anti-bacterial drugs (BNF Section 5.1).

Highlights

  • The overall NHS expenditure on medicines in 2012 was £13.3 billion.

  • In 2012 hospital use accounted for 36.5 per cent of the total cost, up from 33.3 per cent in 2011.

  • The cost of medicines rose by 1.5 per cent overall but by 11.1 per cent in hospitals.

  • Of the drugs positively appraised by NICE, the greatest overall cost was for adalimumab, which also incurred the greatest cost in hospitals.
