Known Data Quality Issues

Please note, we are aware of a data quality issue affecting the figures in this report.

As a consequence of the NHS cyber attack last year, certain providers have been unable to submit complete A&E data. The data used to produce this report are therefore incomplete and there may be undercounts in certain figures. We are currently in the process of identifying affected providers and rectifying the issue.

Announcement of changes to Provisional Accident and Emergency Quality Indicators for England

The proposed changes include improving the format of the publication files. The csv file will change to an open data format, the excel will be replaced by tables within the dashboard and csv and an improved metadata will support these changes. The measures referencing “longest wait” will be removed from the publication after concluding they provide poor insight and quantitative information for the users. Additionally, the publication will include data for a rolling time period rather than starting in April.

The first publication to be affected by this change will be the release on 9th March, which will include data to January 2022.

The impact of the above changes on Provisional Accident and Emergency Quality Indicators for England is expected to be:

  • Outputs will meet open data standards and best practice
  • Improved user experience
  • Consistent documentation and metadata aligned with NHS Digital publications
  • Reduced number of measures

Information about how you use the publication, including the measures referring to “longest wait”, and feedback on the publication is welcomed and should be submitted using the Form here https://forms.office.com/e/FXXcn7YE9C

Key Facts

Interactive A&E CQI Report

Users are able to review the data at England level or provider level in a more visual way, with added filters for data relating to the current financial year.

  • ECDS data contains 2.1 million A&E attendances for December 2022 at all types of A&E. However, ECDS data are incomplete; around 2.2 million A&E attendances were reported in the NHS England and NHS Improvement Situation Report data collection for the month, and 50 organisations that report data to Situation Reports did not report data to ECDS; these organisations are mostly lower acuity services such as minor injury units and walk-in centres
  • The median average time to initial assessment for attendances brought to A&E by ambulance was 11 minutes, with 95 per cent of patients being assessed within 2 hours 14 minutes.  For all patients receiving treatment, the median average time to treatment was 94 minutes with 95 per cent of patients receiving treatment within 7 hours 6 minutes.
  • The median average total time in A&E for all patients was 3 hours 31 minutes, with 95 per cent of patients departing A&E within 18 hours 25 minutes of arrival.
  • Nationally, 8 per cent of attendances at A&E departments were recorded as having left A&E before being seen for treatment, and 8 per cent of attendances in A&E in December 2022 were unplanned re-attendances within 7 days of a previous attendance.
