Recorded Dementia Diagnoses September 2019

Summary

We collect and publish data about people with dementia at each GP practice, so that the NHS (GPs and commissioners) can make informed choices about how to plan their services around their patients needs.

This publication includes the rate of dementia diagnosis. As not everyone with dementia has a formal diagnosis, this statistic compares the number of people thought to have dementia with the number of people diagnosed with dementia, aged 65 and over.

Highlights

Recorded dementia diagnosis rate

478,439 people have a coded diagnosis of dementia as at 30 September 2019,  a small increase of 835 since 31 August 2019

Diagnosis rate in those aged 65 and over

68.8% of those aged over 65 estimated to have dementia, have a coded diagnosis of dementia. This is the same as August 2019

Medication reviewing for people with a coded diagnosis of dementia

In those with a coded diagnosis of dementia, 101,286 (21.2%) have had their medications reviewed by a GP in the preceding 12 months
