Summary
This publication provides information about the number of clinical or administrative submissions (or requests) that general practices receive from their patients via Online Consultation Systems.
The publication consists of an Excel file containing a national-level time series from April to November 2023 and a practice-level table for the most recent month. For technical reasons, data for December is yet available.
The national time series provides the following monthly figures:
• Practices: The total count of practices along with the number of practices known to have an Online Consultation System and the number of practices that received one or more patient requests/submissions via their Online Consultation System
• Registered patients for the three groups of practices listed above
• The total submissions received via Online Consultation Systems, broken down into clinical, administrative or other/unknown submission type
• The rate of submissions per 1,000 patients registered with practices known to have an Online Consultation System
The practice-level table provides the following for November 2023:
• All practices that were open at the beginning of the month
• The name of their Online Consultation Systems supplier(s) or “None/Unknown” for practices not currently covered by the collection
• The count of patient submissions received via Online Consultation Systems classified as clinical, administrative or other/unknown type
• Each practice’s registered patient count
• The rate of patient submissions received per 1,000 registered patients
The accompanying CSV and the machine-readable open data file include all months from the beginning of the 2023/24 financial year. The suppliers of Online Consultation Systems provide the data for this publication on behalf of the practices that they serve, and which have agreed to participate in the collection. Some system suppliers are not yet able to provide data for this collection, but we are working closely with them to resolve any barriers to data provision, and we anticipate that once they are able to provide data, we will receive their patient-submissions back to April 2023, which will enable us to revise the time series. Currently, however, we hold data for around three quarters of practices.
System suppliers are welcome to supply retrospective data and updates, which means this publication is a snapshot at the time of publication, and the time series and monthly practice-level figures may be subject to change in future releases.
It is important to note that no patient identifiable or patient-clinical information is collected or available in this release.

Practices received 2.8 million patient submissions in November 2023.
Submissions per 1,000 Registered Patients
In November 2023, participating practices received 55.8 submissions per 1,000 registered patients.
