Reporting the outcomes of current HSCIC activities on reviewing the quality of health and social care data and outlining future plans to provide assurance over the quality of nationally submitted data (for secondary uses).

Highlights

  • The error rate in the data that govern how much hospitals are paid for care they provide - Payment by Results (PbR) - ranged from zero to more than 20 per cent, according to Audit Commission figures.
  • 4,500 duplicate patient care records, where a patient is assigned a new NHS number when one already exists, were corrected by the HSCIC
  • The recording of valid NHS numbers by hospitals was above 98 per cent for inpatient and outpatient services but lower, at 93 per cent, for accident and emergency services
  • Seven local authorities submitted some adult social care returns with 15-20 per cent of data incomplete. Two councils submitted a return with more than 20 per cent missing.
