Summary Care Record - SMSP API standards
Become a Spine Mini Service Provider giving access to a patient's Summary Care Record using our SMSP API standards.
Overview
Become a Spine Mini Service Provider giving access to a patient's Summary Care Record using our SMSP API standards.
Your commercially available Spine Mini Service Providers (SMSP) product will give access to SCR for your SMSP clients. We will list your SMSP provider service along with other conforming software products in our Conformance Catalogue.
Your SCR SMSP clients can access a patient's Summary Care Record (SCR) - a national electronic record of patient information, created from GP summaries of medical records. SCRs can be seen and used by authorised staff in other areas of the health and care system involved in the patient's direct care.
Summary Care Record was previously known as Personal Spine Information Service (PSIS).
Also use these API standards to connect to the Access Control Service (ACS) - which manages consent to share information for SCR. GP systems must check consent to share before sharing a patient's Summary Care Record.
Your SCR SMSP clients can:
- retrieve a patient's Summary Care Record
- set and check consent to share information - via the Access Control Service (ACS)
Your SCR SMSP clients cannot:
- create or add to a patient's Summary Care Record - as a GP system capable of uploading GP summaries - because this SMSP API standard is read-only
- update GP medical records.
Before you begin any development work using these API standards, contact us to discuss your best options.
Who can use this API
These API standards can only be used where there is a legal basis to do so. Make sure you have a valid use case before you go too far with your development.
You must do this before you can go live (see ‘Onboarding’ below).
Note that in addition to SMSP provider software assurance, for clinical safety reasons, we also need to assure your SMSP clients.
Status
These API standards are active.
Technology
These API standards are based on our SCR HL7 V3 API but with a simplified read-only model and only synchronous interactions, using HL7 V3 SOAP web services.
The synchronous pattern is used for interactions which need an immediate response and run quickly, for example:
- PSIS Document List Data Request
- PSIS Document Data Request
For more details, see HL7 V3.
Network access
You need a Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) connection to use these API standards.
For more details, see Network access for APIs.
Testing
You can test these API standards using our Path to Live environments.
Onboarding
You must get your software onboarded before it can go live.
As part of onboarding, these API standards use the Target Operating Model (TOM) process, which is simpler than the traditional Common Assurance Process (CAP).
Note that in addition to SMSP provider software assurance, for clinical safety reasons, we also need to assure your SMSP clients.
For more details, and to get a copy of the latest TOM forms to complete, contact the interoperability conformance team on [email protected].
