Deprecation notice: Chrome extension

The Chrome extension will be:

• deprecated on 1 January 2024
• retired on 31 May 2024

Google Chrome will begin disabling Manifest V2 extensions from June 2024.

On 1 January 2024 the Chrome extension will be deprecated and continue to be maintained to 'reasonable endeavours' by the NHS Care Identity Service.

On 31 May 2024, the Chrome Extension will be retired and will no longer work.

From June 2024, Google Chrome will sunset Manifest V2.

CIS1-enabled systems

Please contact your system supplier(s) and discuss the migration to CIS2 Authentication.

CIS2 Authentication-enabled systems

We recommend that users of the Chrome extension switch to using NHS Credential Management.

Health and social care professionals

If you normally authenticate with a smartcard and already have NHS Credential Management installed, it's unlikely that you'll notice a difference.

Organisations providing IT support for health and social care professionals

You must move to using NHS Credential Management with CIS2 Authentication-enabled systems.

Health and social care application providers

Should experience no change.

Registration Authorities

Should experience no change.

The NHS Chrome extension is a legacy extension originally developed in 2014 in support of authentication using modern Chromium-based browsers. Since then, NHS Credential Management has rolled out successfully with around 1.3 million installs.

From June 2024, Google Chrome will stop working with Manifest V2 extensions. Any applications requiring the use of the NHS Chrome extension will stop working from that date. We are therefore deprecating the Chrome extension in January 2024 and retiring it at the end of May 2024.

We will monitor and proactively contact trusts with users accessing CIS1 and CIS2-enabled systems via the Chrome extension. The Chrome extension will not be rewritten for Manifest V3.

We encourage all system suppliers to migrate to CIS2 Authentication.
