Helping to realise huge cost savings across NHS England's cloud-based services

NHS England’s Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) has helped deliver substantial cost savings across the organisation’s cloud hosted services, such as NHS 111, the Directory of Services (DoS), NHS UK, the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS), Data Services, the NHS App and NHS login.

The Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) provides centralised, enabling services to support NHS England's services to operate effectively on cloud platforms. These services include:

  • cloud platform engineering/automation/account administration
  • cloud security and compliance oversight
  • cloud guardrails, patterns and policies as code
  • FinOps and financial management
  • vendor management and performance
  • cloud adoption and management consultancy to the NHS

A key area of success to date in the CCoE is the FinOps service.

Our FinOps function provides a centralised view of all of NHS England's cloud costs and usage. We are able to analyse NHS England's cloud usage data and have been able to make organisational-wide commitments which has saved in the region of several millions of pounds a year (approximately a 40% saving). We’ve also worked extremely closely with most service teams across NHS England to deliver significant savings
We are able to monitor and track usage data and patterns of demand across all of our services in the cloud, which are provided by AWS and Microsoft Azure. By looking at the data in this way, we can then identify where cost savings and optimisations can be made through our suppliers.

The CCoE are also supporting other NHS organisations with their migration to the cloud, by sharing their FinOps expertise and other key learning with those in the healthcare system.

They have received positive feedback from many trusts who they have supported, including The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, whose Interim CIO, Neill Crump said:

Working with the CCoE at NHS England has been really important to Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, to benefit from learning across England, demonstrate best practice assurance to our Trust Board, and help provide knowledge transfer to our Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) team.
