COVID-19 Second Generation Surveillance System

The data can only be used for the purposes of COVID-19 in accordance with the COVID-19 Public Health Directions 2020.

The SGSS data is to be collected for the purposes of direct care, service monitoring, planning and research in response to the spread of COVID-19, including for the following purposes identified in the COVID-19 Directions: 

• understanding information about patient access to health services and adult social care services as a direct or indirect result of COVID-19 and the availability and capacity of those services
• monitoring and managing the response to COVID-19 by health and social care bodies and the Government, including providing information to the public about COVID-19 and its effectiveness, and information about capacity, medicines, equipment, supplies, services and the workforce within the health services and adult social care services
• research and planning in relation to COVID-19, such as providing COVID-19 diagnosis

The UK GDPR Article 6 lawful basis for the processing of the personal data within this collection falls under: 

• article 6(1)(e) processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller

The UK GDPR Article 9 condition for processing special categories of personal data within the collection falls under: 

• article 9 2 (h) processing is necessary for the provision of health care or treatment, and for the management of health care systems or services
