Referrer advice and guidance (tactical solution)
Find out about new referrer functionality in the NHS e-Referral Service API.
This feature went live in e-RS Release 14.2 (Friday 14 June 2024).
The information below was correct at the time of release.
Background
Advice and guidance (A&G) allows a referrer to enter into dialogue with a provider around a patient’s care.
Referrer A&G API functionality remains on our roadmap but is not currently prioritised. While the intention is to provide a full suite of new (FHIR R4) API endpoints, this is a longer term piece of work.
To support referring partners in the intervening period, we will be introducing a tactical A&G solution.
The solution will allow partners to initiate an A&G request and start the conversation with a provider via our API. Functionality to manage ongoing advice requests will require the use of the e-RS professional web application.
Please note that this is a tactical solution which offers limited API functionality. Part of the use case requires using seamless transition functionality which partners must understand and implement separately.
Tactical solution
You can find out more about the tactical solution on our 'Create advice and guidance requests as a referrer' use case guide. Use this guide to understand the solution and confirm your use case.
What you need to do
This is new API functionality so there are no immediate actions required.
However, as part of this implementation there are changes to our binary file ID which may impact existing partners who upload and maintain referral attachments.
If you are planning to implement this solution, you should:
- Review the use case guide
- Confirm the change to the binary ID won’t be of issue to your software solution
- Check your users have access to the e-RS professional web application
