Character limit increase for Advice and Guidance messages

We are making enhancements to Advice and Guidance (A&G) messages in the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS).

1. What we're doing and why

From August 2025 (Release 15.6), the character limit for A&G request and response messages will increase from 2,000 to 8,000 UTF-8 characters.

This update will apply to both the web-based professional application and the e-RS API.

The increased character limit directly addresses user feedback and aims to enhance clinical communication. It will enable clinicians to:

  • provide more detailed guidance, including high-quality, structured information on treatment plans

  • avoid splitting responses across multiple messages or sending them as attachments

2. What this means for your solution

A&G messages will now be up to 8,000 characters.

This means that partner solutions will:

  • begin receiving larger messages
  • have the capability to create A&G requests, and send A&G responses, with increased message sizes

The proposed changes impact solutions using our A&G endpoints, for example: Retrieve advice and guidance conversation (A025), Send advice and guidance response (A026), and Convert advice and guidance request to referral (A027).

Partners must ensure this enhancement does not negatively impact their software and that users are able to use the new character limit.

Please contact us immediately if you have any queries and concerns: [email protected]

3. What you need to do

We do not consider this a breaking change. However, we recommend that partners:

  • test your software to make sure you are not impacted
  • ensure your software is able to accommodate the larger character limit
  • understand the impact to your users
