Electronic Prescription Service in integrated urgent care

EPS allows prescribers in integrated urgent care settings to send electronic prescriptions to community pharmacies, removing the need for paper prescriptions.

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) allows prescribers in integrated urgent care settings – such as NHS 111, GP out of hours, clinical assessment services (CAS), walk-in centres, minor injuries units and urgent care centres – to send electronic prescriptions to community pharmacies.

EPS replaces paper prescriptions, making prescribing and dispensing more efficient and saving time when medication is needed urgently.

The functionality available will vary depending on the type of service and their existing prescribing system. Contact your system supplier to check.

On this page, you can find information about EPS in integrated urgent care for providers, prescribers and pharmacies.

Unsupported EPS functionality in urgent care

EPS in integrated urgent care is a simplified version of that used in primary care. Functions that are not available include:

  • repeat prescribing and electronic repeat dispensing (eRD)
  • post-dating prescriptions
  • ability to access or change the patient's regular nomination
  • prescription token printing
  • item level cancellation
  • EPS non-nominated prescriptions

Preparing for EPS

To prepare your service for EPS, follow the guidance on enabling EPS for your service.
