Federated Data Platform

The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) safely connects information across the NHS, making it easier for staff and clinicians to do their jobs. Already funded and established, it’s designed to turn insight to action.

About this service

The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) is a foundational data infrastructure with distinct components, including:

  • core infrastructure: the platform primarily connects existing systems and data, breaking down silos to create a unified view of information
  • product solutions: specific applications built on the platform address particular challenges like ‘waiting list management’ and ‘discharge planning’
  • analytical capabilities: the platform provides tools to analyse connected data, helping identify patterns and opportunities for improvement
  • cloud-based data warehouse: the new operational management information use case enables organisations to use the NHS FDP as a modern data warehouse solution, supporting statutory functions while advancing the cloud-first ambition

Who this service is for

Every trust (acute, mental health, community and ambulance) and integrated care board (ICB) will have access to their own instance of the NHS FDP, which they will have complete control over. Access for each instance of the NHS FDP will be governed and managed by each individual organisation.

Read information for acute trusts and information for ICBs on the NHS FDP website.

The national NHS England instance serves as a replacement for multiple legacy systems, and delivers accurate, near-real-time data to inform strategic and operational planning.

The NHS FDP Centre of Excellence, available to all users of the platform, provides knowledge, expertise and resources to support all user groups to effectively leverage the capabilities of the NHS FDP, including training and education services.

Examples of use

NHS organisations are using the NHS FDP to drive innovation and improve care. Read case studies on benefits local organisations are deriving from the platform.

National usage policy

NHS FDP is fully funded for local organisations, NHS England has paid for licenses for all NHS Trusts and ICBs and also funds a support package.

While implementation is not being mandated, all trusts and ICBs were asked to provide plans for how they will maximise the benefits of the NHS FDP for their patients in the near term. NHS England operational planning guidance for 2025 to 2026 sets out an NHS FDP first policy.

Status, service level and current usage

NHS England has procured and paid for licenses to provide a FDP for all NHS providers as well as the ICBs.

This service is live and has been in use since 2024.

The NHS FDP is a platinum service, meaning it is available and supported 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
