Female Genital Mutilation – Information Sharing in NCRS

Female Genital Mutilation - Information Sharing (FGM-IS) supports the early intervention and safeguarding of girls under the age of 18, by indicating when a patient has a family history of FGM.

Female Genital Mutilation - Information Sharing (FGM-IS) supports the early intervention and safeguarding of girls under the age of 18, by indicating when a patient has a family history of FGM. 

In the National Care Records Service (NCRS), the FGM-IS indicator can be seen in the ‘Overview’ and ‘Patient’ tabs. On the ‘Overview’ tab, it will appear as an orange banner that you can click on to view details. 


Roles with permission for FGM-IS

These role-based access control (RBAC) codes can view FGM-IS indicators:

  • B0370 to view an FGM-IS indicator
  • B0380 to view, add or remove an FGM-IS indicator

How to add an FGM-IS indicator

  1. Search for the patient.
  2. When you are in the patient record, select ‘Patient details' and then 'Flags / Alerts' in desktop view or 'Female Genital Mutilation – Information Sharing (FGM-IS)' on the left-hand side in table view.
  3. Check the guidance and then click ‘Add FGM Information sharing indicator’.
  4. Enter the date when the family history of FGM was identified, then select ‘Confirm and add FGM indicator’.

Cosmetic genital piercings and tattoos

Health and care professionals should use their clinical judgement when deciding if they should add an indicator for cosmetic genital piercings and tattoos, relying on their training to understand what FGM is.


How to remove an FGM-IS indicator

  1. Search for the patient.
  2. When you are in the patient record, navigate to the alert by selecting it from the 'Overview' tab. You can also view the alert by selecting ‘Patient details' and then 'Flags / Alerts' in desktop view, or 'Female Genital Mutilation – Information Sharing (FGM-IS)' on the left-hand side in table view.
  3. Click ‘Remove FGM indicator'.
  4. Confirm the reason that you are removing the FGM-IS indicator before clicking ‘Remove FGM Indicator’.
