How to navigate a patient record

When you have found a patient, their record will have at least 3 tabs: 'Overview', 'Patient details' and 'Clinical'. Some roles have access to a 'Documents' tab.

When you have found a patient, their record will have at least 3 tabs:

  • 'Overview'
  • 'Patient details'
  • 'Clinical'

There is also a top menu bar with links to:

  • find a patient
  • list Birth Notifications, if you have access to do this
  • change your role
  • see what is new in NCRS 
  • give feedback
  • change your settings
  • log out

Overview tab

Not all roles have permissions to view the information that is on the Overview tab. This information could include:

  • links to any flags or alerts for the patient, such as a child protection alert, female genital mutilation alert or Reasonable Adjustments Flag
  • links to demographic information
  • link to the Summary Care Record
  • link to any documents on the patient’s record

In 'Settings', which can be accessed from the top menu, there is an option to bypass the Overview page if you do not have any clinical RBAC codes. 


'Patient details' tab

The 'Patient details' tab could include information about:

  • demographics
  • GP and other care providers
  • contacts and next of kin
  • flags and alerts
  • history of demographic, GP and contact information 
  • create a birth notification, if the patient is female
  • a patient's Chargeable Status 

Links to this information are also on the ‘Overview’ tab.

There is a tablet view for this information, which you can select in the top right of the patient tab content. Your selection will be remembered by your device.


'Clinical' tab

The 'Clinical' tab contains information about:

  • the patient's Summary Care Record 
  • COVID-19 vaccinations 


'Documents' tab

Only roles with RBAC codes B0268 and B0269 will have access to the 'Documents' tab. 

This tab contains pointers to National Record Locator documents that relate to the patient that you can view in your browser. This could include: 

  • mental health crisis plans 
  • end of life plans 
  • emergency care plans
