DDM Health

How NHS login is helping provide confidence and credibility, especially in the Black, Asian and minority ethnic community.

Summary

NHS login has helped provide a level of confidence on multiple levels; for users in the Low Carb app, for clinicians to monitor patients safely and securely, and for DDM Health as an organisation with added credibility.

  • DDM Health launched the Low Carb app which provides goal-focused structured education, behaviour change resources and support to implement a lower-carbohydrate lifestyle.
  • The DDM Health app went live with NHS login in November 2020.
  • Having NHS login as a register/sign in option has provided clinicians and users with additional confidence and trust in using the product and obtaining accurate feedback and results through the app.
  • In particular NHS login has helped to reassure clinicians of BAME users that their details are authentic and verified, given many do not have English as their first language and may need assistance from family or friends to use the app.
  • Lastly, it has also brought additional interest in DDM Health both internationally and with new investors, such is the strength of the NHS login brand.

The challenge

  • DDM Health need to be able to securely verify users for the Low Carb app to provide clinicians with the reassurance and confidence that users are who they said they are and that the user data could be linked to them as individuals.
  • DDM Health currently have 1.8 million users – with around 50% in the UK.

The solution

  • NHS login provided this high level of identity verification and assurance of patients accessing the Low Carb app in the UK.
  • When it went live, DDM Health conducted marketing activity across social media, their website and local digital press. This generated a lot of intrigue and interest with people wanting to know more about what NHS login was and how it worked.

The benefits

DDM Health benefits

  • The trust of the NHS brand, brought from having NHS login on the ‘front door’ of the app, has been the biggest benefit realised for DDM Health, clinicians, users and investors.
  • For DDM Health as a company, NHS login has enhanced their reputation both in the UK but also internationally.
  • As founder Arjun Panesar said: ‘It shows to the outside world we are committed to a fully integrated digital ecosystem.’
  • Arjun also went on to say that the impact of having NHS login on their product has given them greater credibility and trust to the outside world.
  • There have also been secondary and unexpected commercial benefits for the company, namely an increased interest from potential investors as a result of the NHS login integration.

User benefits

  • For the users of the Low Carb app, using NHS login has given them a simpler, more unified and cohesive experience along with the added trust from the brand.
  • Dr Peter Foley (DDM Health CMO) said, "NHS login gives our growing number of Low Carb app users a perfect way to unify their digital access and provides trust to patients, knowing that their healthcare journey is safe with an NHS-trusted app."
  • A DDM Health user said, "NHS login has made it easier for me to manage my logins and has made accessing the app simpler as I don't need to remember multiple passwords."
  • In particular, there is added reassurance across the BAME community for users and their clinicians. Often if English is not their first language patients have to ask friends or family members to help them. Having NHS login ensures that the person registering is the patient and not a family member – giving clinicians reassurance that the patient is the one using the app.
  • Further benefits will be realised as NHS login is rolled out across more partner products and services and users become familiar with it as a way to quickly and easily access digital health tools and link to their own medical records and data.

Clinician benefits

  • Currently, clinicians can look at the data from the app with the patient to see their engagement and the impact of the programme.
  • However, they would also like to be able to monitor, track and treat the patients when not with them. DDM Health are currently exploring the development of the app functionality to accommodate the clinicians need.
  • Being able to monitor a patient’s engagement in the app as well as record and track their weight and glucose levels in their own system would greatly enhance the benefits for the clinicians and the level of intervention and support they can provide the patient.
  • With NHS login providing the secure verification of the patient, clinicians will be able to confidently record this data and support the patient better.
