NHS Notify

NHS Notify allows organisations and services to send NHS App messages, emails, texts and letters to patients and the public more effectively.

About this service

A diagram of how the NHS Notify service works.

NHS Notify allows organisations and services to send NHS App messages, emails, text messages and letters to patients and members of the public.

It uses different communications suppliers so organisations and services can:

  • stop procuring their own communication suppliers
  • send messages at market competitive rates
  • use multiple channels to message patients and the public at an individual or national scale
  • support accessible formats (opens in a new tab)

NHS Notify is also integrated with the Personal Demographics Service (PDS), which allows it to:

  • use NHS numbers to find a person's contact information
  • prevent sending messages to people who cannot be contacted

Examples of use

Organisations and services are using NHS Notify to send:

  • confirmation messages to patients when they register with a GP surgery
  • vaccination invitations
  • screening invitations and results
  • health or adult social care research invitations
  • messages to patients via GPIT software

How this service works

  1. The organisation or service integrates with NHS Notify.
  2. When ready to send their messages, the organisation or service sends recipients' NHS numbers and the message details to NHS Notify API or NHS Notify MESH.
  3. NHS Notify uses recipients' NHS numbers in the Personal Demographics Service to find their contact details and check if they have any flagged records or other restricted statuses.
  4. NHS Notify uses its communication suppliers to send NHS App messages, email, text message (SMS) or letter based on how the organisation or service has decided to send its messages.
  5. NHS Notify does not send messages to recipients who have PDS flagged records including restricted statuses or people who are flagged as deceased.

NHS Notify uses multiple communication suppliers to send messages such as the NHS App and GOV.UK Notify to send emails, text messages (SMS) and letters.

If you need to use contact details that are not from PDS, you must make a formal request to NHS Notify. This is only granted for specific use-cases with compelling data and evidence to support this.
