Update dm+d Standard (SCCI0052) to incorporate current enhancements

SCCI0052: Dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d). The primary purpose of the Standard is to support medicines interoperability in the NHS through the use of a dictionary of medicines licensed in the United Kingdom.

Page contents

Summary

A set of Supplementary Files are available in addition to the main dm+d files. Supplementary Files are produced to the same timetable as the dm+d files and also presented as dm+d type XML files with associated schema files. Data in Supplementary Files sits outside the core data model and is not part of the core dm+d download files. The core download files reflect what has been approved in the SCCI0052 Standard, anything outside of the Standard cannot be released in the core extract on TRUD.

The scope for updating the dm+d Standard is:

  • dm+d historical codes (Live in dm+d)
  • Ingredients for VTMs (Live in dm+d)
  • Trade Family and Trade Family Group (Expected in dm+d: To be confirmed)
  • Removal of the 'interesting' excipient field  (Data has not been in dm+d extract since October 2022)

The purpose of updating SCCI0052 is to reflect the above changes as part of the core dm+d data model (as part of the Standard) and be reflected in the core dm+d extract, rather than as Supplementary Files.

NB. The scope of SCCI0052 is the NHS in England. However, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland do use/amend dm+d data for their own use and may also be impacted by change to the dm+d download files.

Timeframe

Our expected timeframe for uplifting SCCI0052 is not until 2026.

Quarter 2 2024: User survey to understand the impacts of uplifting SCCI0052

NHS England ran a survey between May and August 2024, obtaining feedback from dm+d users of the impacts of updating the scope of SCCI0052 and the resultant change to the core dm+d files and download.

Quarter 3 2024: Proceeding with uplifting SCCI0052

Findings from the user survey were presented to the dm+d Content Committee in October. The Committee has approved proceeding with uplifting SCCI0052.

Quarter 1 2025: Status update for uplifting SCCI0052

Due to a number of factors, NHS England is pausing the uplift to SCCI0052. This decision was supported by the dm+d Content Committee at their February meeting.

Further information about the changes, timeframes, test files, dates of dual running periods of dm+d releases and progress with the NHS England Standard Assurance process will be shared as information becomes available.
