General Practice Workforce GP Joiners and Leavers, by PCN group

GP Joiners and Leavers to and from the general practice workforce, by age band and PCN of employing practice - March 2020 to December 2023

Request received

Request received for general practice workforce GP joiner and leaver figures at Primary Care Network (PCN) level, broken down by age band. Historical figures were requested, for two separate cohorts of fully-qualified GPs - one including locum GPs and one excluding them.

Our response

In response we provided a CSV presenting joiner and leaver headcount and full-time equivalent (FTE) figures for the two cohorts across annual periods beginning on the last day of March, June, September and December each year, from March 2020 through to December 2023. Joiner and leaver figures represent joiners to and leavers from the general practice workforce in England as whole and do not include staff moving between practices / PCNs.

Also included are FTE and headcount figures representing all GPs included in the analysis on each reporting date, to enable the calculation of joiner and leaver rates for each annual period.

Figures are broken down by age band as well as all ages, and by the PCN code of the PCN each GP's employing practice was part of on the relevant reporting date.

Please note these figures do not relate to staff employed by PCNs, only those employed by general practices.

Users are urged to read the GP joiners and leavers by PCN definitions file in the accompanying Zip folder before attempting to interpret the results.
