Data is presented showing the number of new referrals to Mental Health Services split by the primary reason for referral and ethnicity in England between 2017-18 and 2023-24. Data is based on the latest information available for a referral and a person with the time period provided. The data provided covers all ages and all secondary mental health services.

Year on year, more healthcare providers have submitted data to MHSDS and hence there has been a general trend of increase in figures over time. Please take this into account when interpreting the changes shown in Table 1.

The data provided only covers the number of new referrals. This does not mean that every referral was accepted or that every person who was referred received treatment as part of the referral.
