Our response

This analysis presents the number of detentions under the Mental Health Act in each year from 2016-17 to 2024-25. This data is then broken down by the primary diagnosis of the person. The data presented provides 3 groupings by diagnosis status (whether the person had a recorded diagnosis (which was for a mental health condition or another condition, or not), diagnosis chapter and individual diagnosis.

Data is sourced from the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). Diagnosis data within MHSDS is collected using ICD-10 and SNOMED. For this analysis, all figures are presented using the ICD-10 diagnosis. Where a diagnosis was recorded using SNOMED, this has been mapped to the relevant ICD-10 code.

The diagnosis of the person has to have occurred before the end of their detention to be counted.
