Learning disabilities and autism – mortality and life expectancy, 2022-23

Mortality rate and life expectancy of autistic people and people with a learning disability

Reporting period: April 2022 to March 2023

These worksheets present two indicators for each of four population groups:

  • Directly standardised mortality rate (per 100,000 population)

  • Observed life expectancy at birth

The population groups are:

  1. All recorded as autistic

  2. Recorded as autistic without a learning disability

  3. Recorded as autistic with a learning disability

  4. Learning disability and not recorded as autistic

These figures are published only for the parts of England covered by reporting general practices as a whole, not for smaller areas. This is because the numbers of deaths of autistic people reported, particularly for older ages, is small making reporting at more local geographic levels potentially subject to significant random fluctuation
