COVID-19 Related Cancer Research

Data Provision Notice to provide NHS Digital with cancer data from a number of Public Health England (PHE) controlled cancer-related data sets.

Overview

The National Cancer Programme has identified a requirement for expert analyses to support policy setting, service planning and recovery modelling as well as quantifying the longer term implications, and understanding the direct and indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the NHS and cancer patient outcomes.

The data to be supplied to NHS Digital by Public Health England will be used in collaboration with other stakeholders to enable research into the effects of COVID-19 on cancer referrals, services, diagnosis, pathways, treatments, and outcomes using the Trusted Research Environment (TRE), hosted by NHS Digital.

Cancer Registrations
Radiotherapy
Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy
Rapid Cancer Registrations
Early Diagnoses (through the Rapid Diagnostic Centre minimum data set).

COVID-19 public health NHS England Directions 2020

Directions given by NHS England requiring NHS Digital to establish and operate information systems to collect analysis data in connection with COVID-19 and develop and operate information and communication systems to deliver services in connection with COVID-19.

The period for the collection will be:

Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC) minimum data set	Initial collection of all data collected to date plus ongoing monthly collection

Change control

Update: 5 August 2021: Version 3.0 of the Notice has been issued to reflect an extension of the Form (one additional data set) and the removal of cancer pathways analysis as a key purpose.

2020

Update: 30 November 2020: the Data Provision Notice has been updated to reflect the use of the cancer data for COVID-19 research purposes, facilitated by NHS Digital's Trusted Research Environment (TRE). The cancer data assets are necessary to enable research into the effects of COVID-19 on cancer referrals, services, diagnosis, pathways, treatments, and outcomes. Data will now be supplied by Public Health England on an ongoing basis.
