Emergency Care Data Set Analytical Technical Output Specification

The Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS) Analytical Technical Output Specification (ATOS) is a data dictionary intended for use by all users of the ECDS Data Product. Data dictionaries work in the same way as normal dictionaries, but they contain information about data items.

This specific ECDS ATOS document contains detailed information of all the fields available in the ECDS data product for all Emergency Care attendances, primarily for the new Data Access Environment (DAE) Data Product. However, all information relating to both the RDS SQL and the FLAT views have been merged in so they are also available for completeness.

It describes how and where this curation takes place to create the data product to promote clarity and transparency to our users facilitating effective utilisation of the data for their own analytical needs.

Details of fields that are cleaned following submission, or derived are also included as well as any known data item issues.

In addition, a visual representation of the tables and fields, including identification of primary and secondary keys for linking between tables, can be found in the ECDS Data Model.

Details on the submitted data, how it is processed by SUS and the full list of all valid SNOMED-CT codes and descriptions, for each field, can be found within the Enhanced TOS (ETOS).

NHS Data Model and Dictionary

The fields within ECDS are either based on or derived from the NHS Data Model and Dictionary. This covers all data sets and data items used in the NHS, not just those from which ECDS is extracted. It is developed and maintained by the NHS Data Model and Dictionary Service at NHS England.

Please send any data dictionary queries to [email protected] referencing ECDS Data Model and Dictionary in the subject.
