Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Waiting Times quick guide to submitting data

This guide was updated in May-24 to reflect the implementation of  Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS)v6. Author: Mental Health, NHS Talking Therapies and Learning Disability and Autism Analysis Team, NHS England

Aim

NHS England is working to improve the recording and reporting of waiting times for Early Intervention in Psychosis using the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

View the MHSDS published figures.

Data collected in MHSDS is used to create the following measures

EIP01

Referrals into a service with a suspected First Episode of Psychosis (FEP) which have entered treatment and remain in treatment at the end of the reporting period. Referrals entering treatment are those who have had a first contact with an Early Intervention for Psychosis team and have been assigned to a care coordinator. This measure is broken down by age group: 0-17; 18-34; 35 and over.

EIP23

Referrals into a service with a suspected First Episode of Psychosis (FEP) which entered treatment in the reporting period. Referrals entering treatment are those who have had a first contact with an Early Intervention for Psychosis team and have been assigned to a care coordinator. This is the number of referrals with a 'clock stop' for waiting times in the reporting period. This measure is broken down to show those who waited two weeks or less to enter treatment and those that waited more than two weeks.

EIP32

Referrals into any service with a suspected First Episode of Psychosis (FEP) received in the reporting period.

EIP63

Referrals into a service with a suspected First Episode of Psychosis (FEP), which have NOT been referred to an Early Intervention for Psychosis team open at the end of the reporting period.

EIP64 to EIP67

Referrals into a service with a suspected First Episode of Psychosis (FEP), which have NOT been referred to an Early Intervention for Psychosis team entering treatment. Referrals entering treatment are those who have had a first contact with any team and have been assigned to a care coordinator with any team. This is the number of referrals with a 'clock stop' for waiting times in the reporting period, but for those who are not on the full EIP pathway.  This measure is broken down to show those who waited two weeks or less to enter-in treatment and those that waited more than two weeks.

EIP68

Count of referrals with at least one attended contact that were linked to an EIP team, regardless of the primary reason for referral, that were not rejected and are still open at the end of the reporting period.

EIP69

Count of referrals with any SNOMED-CT activity that were linked to an EIP team, regardless of the primary reason for referral, that were not rejected and are still open at the end of the reporting period.

MHSDS data items needed for these measures

The table below lists all MHSDS fields needed by NHS Digital to compile these measures, alongside the mandatory tables and data items needed to make a submission to the MHSDS. More information can be found in the MHSDS User Guidance and Technical Output Specification.

The metrics published by NHS Digital are published every month.

Data needed for recording Early Intervention in Psychosis

Please note that with the implementation of MHSDS v6 - in order to 'start' the clock:

  • PrimReasonReferralMH in MHS101Referral must be 01 – (Suspected) First Episode Psychosis
  • ServTeamTypeRefToMH in MHS902ServiceTeamDetails must be A14 - Early Intervention Team for Psychosis
  • Either CareProfTeamLocalID in MHS101Referral or OtherCareProfTeamLocalID in MHS102OtherServiceType must link to the Early Intervention Team for Psychosis in MHS902ServiceTeamDetail

Clock start dates will be taken from the ReferralRequestReceivedDate in MHS101Referral

Table Field Notes specific to EIP
MHS101Referral ReferralRequestReceivedDate Used to ‘start the clock’. Limited to new referrals from 1 January 2016.
PrimReasonReferralMH Only include where: 01 – (Suspected) First Episode Psychosis
ServDischDate To remove from ‘stop the clock’ waits
CareProfTeamLocalID Used to link to Early Intervention for Psychosis team in the MHS902ServiceTeamDetails table
MHS102OtherServiceType

ReferClosureDate

To remove from ‘stop the clock’ waits

ReferRejectionDate To remove from ‘stop the clock’ waits
OtherCareProfTeamLocalID Used to link to Early Intervention for Psychosis team in the MHS902ServiceTeamDetails table
MHS902ServiceTeamDetails ServTeamTypeRefToMH Only include where: A14 - Early Intervention Team for Psychosis

Please note that with the implementation of MHSDS v6 - there is now a OtherCareProfTeamLocalID field in the MHS201CareContact table but no longer a CareProfTeamLocalID field. The following outlines the specific scenarios and how they will be handled in order to 'stop the clock'

Scenario 1:

  • CareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS101Referral and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is not recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is not recorded in MHS201CareContact

Outcome: the contact will be assumed to be with the team entered in the CareProfTeamLocalID in MHS101Referral

Scenario 2:

  • CareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS101Referral and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is not recorded in MHS201CareContact

Outcome: the contact will be assumed to be with the team entered in the CareProfTeamLocalID in MHS101Referral

Scenario 3:

  • CareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS101Referral and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS201CareContact and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID in MHS201CareContact matches the EIP team recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType

Outcome: the contact will be assumed to be with the team entered in the OtherCareProfTeamLocalID in MHS102OtherServiceType

Scenario 4:

  • CareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS101Referral and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID is recorded in MHS201CareContact and
  • OtherCareProfTeamLocalID in MHS201CareContact doesn't match the EIP team recorded in MHS102OtherServiceType

Outcome: the contact will not count towards clock-stops

For EIP68 and EIP69 we are also interested in the recording of SNOMED data and below are the tables and fields where these are counted.
