Perinatal Access and Maternal Access data quick guide to submitting data

This guidance has been developed to support the improvement to improve the recording and reporting of perinatal access and maternal access data using the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). It was updated in May 2024 for the implementation of MHSDS v6. Author: Mental Health, NHS Talking Therapies and Learning Disability and Autism Analysis Team.

Aim

Perinatal and maternal access statistics are published both monthly and annually.

This guidance will focus on the current construction of monthly statistic, MHS91 - Number of people in contact with Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Community Services (12 month rolling).

For activity reporting relating to 2023/24 onwards the metric will also include trans men and non-binary people accessing services, based on data recorded against the GENDER IDENTITY CODE and GENDER IDENTITY SAME AT BIRTH INDICATOR. This is to establish a more inclusive approach to identifying patients relevant to the core scope of the NHS Long Term Plan aims to expand access to perinatal and maternal mental health services. Trans and non-binary patients have always been able to use these services, which the data can now better reflect

Read the data quality of protected characteristics and other vulnerable groups guidance.

Furthermore, the following three tables need to be submitted in each submission with their respective mandatory and required fields. More information can be found in the MHSDS User Guidance and Technical Output Specification.
