Quarterly and 1-year rolling unadjusted percentage of all cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2

All stageable cancer sites/groups are included within this section, this includes the 18 cancer sites/groups in Table 1 plus other stageable cancer sites defined according to the UKIACR. The denominator is the total number of cancers diagnosed with a valid stage.

During April to June 2020, there was a decrease in the unadjusted percentage of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 in England, which fell from 55% during January to March 2020 to 47% during April to June 2020. This contrasted with the relatively stable trend that was seen up to March 2020. For this reason, we compare the unadjusted percentage of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 in England in 2021 against 2019 in this section of the publication as a more stable comparison.

Across 21 Cancer Alliances, comparing the most recent quarter, October to December 2021, with October to December 2019 the unadjusted percentage of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 were not significantly different for 20 Cancer Alliances and were significantly higher for 1 Cancer Alliance.

When comparing the most recent 1-year rolling period, January to December 2021, the unadjusted percentage of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 remained significantly lower than during the same period in 2019 for 7 Cancer Alliances, however differences were small ranging from a decrease of 1.2 to 2.3 percentage points.
