Summary

People between the ages of 25 and 64 are invited for regular cervical screening under the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. This is intended to detect abnormalities within the cervix that could, if undetected and untreated, develop into cervical cancer.

This statistical report, co-authored with Public Health England (PHE), reports on the NHS Cervical Screening Programme for England in 2020-21. It includes data on the call and recall system, on screening samples examined by pathology laboratories and on subsequent referrals to colposcopy clinics.

Note: On 6 January 2022, appendix K was updated to ensure the description used is correct and consistent with the main report and data quality statement.

Highlights

70.2% of eligible individuals aged 25 to 64 adequately screened

A 2.0 percentage point decrease on the previous year, when coverage was 72.2%.

4.59 million individuals aged 25 to 64 invited for screening

A decrease of 1.0% on the previous year, when 4.63 million were invited.

3.03 million individuals aged 25 to 64 tested

A decrease of 5.3% on the previous year, when 3.20 million were tested
