Summary

People between the ages of 25 and 64 are invited for regular cervical screening under the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. This is intended to detect abnormalities within the cervix that could, if undetected and untreated, develop into cervical cancer.

This statistical report covers the NHS Cervical Screening Programme for England in 2023-2024. It includes data on the call and recall system, on screening samples examined by pathology laboratories and on subsequent referrals to colposcopy clinics.

68.8% of eligible individuals aged 25 to 64 adequately screened

A 0.1 percentage point increase on the previous year, when coverage was 68.7%.

5.12 million individuals aged 25 to 64 invited for screening

An increase of 10.7% on the previous year, when 4.62 million were invited. 

3.25 million individuals aged 25 to 64 tested

(Tested in 2023-24)

A decrease of 5.3% on the previous year, when 3.43 million were tested.

251,251 referrals to colposcopy in 2023-24

(All ages, all referral reasons)

An increase of 1.8% from the previous year, when 246,762 were referred.
