Cervical Screening Programme - Coverage Statistics [Management Information]

Coverage data unavailable for Q2 2024-25

Data Q2 2024-25 will not be available for publication.
This is due to a delay in the transition of reporting from Open Exeter to the new Cervical Screening Management System (CSMS).
Local Authority (LA) level data was not available from Q1 2024-25.

Q1 2024-25: Data for Sub-ICB and GP practice was extracted from the legacy NHAIS system up to the point of transfer (24-Jun-2024). The usual 2-month lag time to ensure that the outcome of all the tests taken in the period are included, has not been applied because the data have been extracted from NHAIS at the point of closure of the NHAIS system. Therefore, the coverage figures reported will be slightly lower than expected

Q1 2024-25 Data Quality Issue

In the original Q1 data submission, a number of GP practices had their activity broken down into multiple entries (different practice names and the same practice code).
Whilst the sum total of this activity was correct, it should not have been separated across multiple rows. The issue affected 171 out of 6470 practices in the report

This data issue has now been corrected, with a single count provided per practice code and associated with the practice name with the highest count prior to de-duplication.

Summary

Publication updated on 7 January 2025 with data for Quarter 1 2024-25.

People between the ages of 25 and 64 years are invited for regular cervical screening under the NHS cervical screening programme. Coverage is defined as the percentage of individuals eligible for screening at a given point in time who were screened adequately within a specified period (within 3.5 years for those aged 25 to 49, and within 5.5 years for those aged 50 to 64).

Information in this quarterly publication is presented at primary care, clinical commissioning group (CCG) and local authority levels. Data are published in 3 separate online interactive dashboards.

From Q2 2022-23, CCGs are replaced by Sub-ICBs in this dataset, the impact on the report is minimal as the organisation structures are very similar.

Highlights

Disclosure Control:

A summary of the disclosure control methodology applied to the GP Practice and Sub-ICB data can be found in the data quality statement on this publication page.

CCGs and Sub-ICBs

On 1st July 2022, as part of the 2022 Health and Care Act, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) were abolished and replaced as statutory bodies by Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). As part of a transition phase, the geographical areas of former CCGs have been temporarily maintained, but are now known as Sub Integrated Care board (Sub-ICB) locations. For data provided in the csv files prior to Quarter 1 2022-23, Org names and codes refer to CCGs.  From Quarter 1 2022-23 organisation names and codes refer to Sub-ICB locations. Although Sub-ICBs did not apply to the Q1 2022-23 period, the source dataset included those breakdowns so they have been used in the published data.

More information about ICBs can be found here: https://digital.nhs.uk/services/organisation-data-service/integrated-care-boards

Purpose of this publication

This online resource will help support the programme to be effective in achieving its aim to reduce the number of women who develop invasive cervical cancer and reduce the number of people who die from it.

The primary care level data pack provides data for GP practices and CCGs to improve cervical screening attendance and coverage rates.

The data provided is primarily at GP practice level and CCG but also local authority level where appropriate.

Data is provided on how the practices compare within the CCG and nationally in relation to cervical screening coverage.

The data will support the CCGs in local improvements and setting priorities in relation to cervical screening.

Who is it for?

For GP practices the resource provides interactive data on the number of people in each practice that have not had a smear test but remain eligible for screening. This data supports practices to identify the size of the cohort to address.

For CCGs the resource provides interactive coverage data on the practices within the CCG. It also provides a CCG comparison and identifies areas for prioritisation and improvement.

For local authorities the resource provides interactive coverage data on their area and identifies areas for improvement and areas to focus health promotion initiatives.

What data is available in the interactive dashboard?

The dashboards present data on screening coverage for 2 age groups, 25 to 49 and 50 to 64 years, which are obtained from monthly reports produced by the Open Exeter system (hosted by NHS England). The dashboard also includes data for the number of individuals eligible and screened at each GP practice, Sub-ICB and local authority.
