Estates Returns Information Collection, Management Information - Provisional Summary Figures for 2023/24
Official statistics, Other reports and statistics
Summary
These are the provisional summary results from the 2023/24 Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC), a mandatory collection for all NHS trusts including Ambulance trusts. It comprises information relating to the costs of providing and maintaining the NHS Estate including buildings, maintaining and equipping hospitals, the provision of services e.g. laundry and food, and the costs and consumption of utilities.
Since the 2018/19 collection NHS England's Workforce and Estates Team and Estates Division have jointly undertaken additional measures to improve data quality. These include extra validations on point of entry and alignment of communications and clarifications to data providers, and an enhanced assurance process once the initial collection phase had been completed. Chief Executive signoff of returns is also required a part of the "commit data" process. NHS England engages closely with trusts to clarify requirements and support accurate reporting via webinars and our timely user support service.
Data users should note that several data fields are currently labelled as unreliable due to having changed definition since the previous reporting period, or due to being introduced relatively recently. Please see the introduction and data quality worksheets for more information.
Highlights
NHS England has continued to work alongside stakeholders and data providers to improve data quality for the 2023/24 collection. This included an extensive data assurance exercise, and further data definition refinement. These data are released as provisional results, allowing organisations a further period of review following publication. We aim to publish the full and final ERIC 2023/24 results later this year. For that reason, data are not presented alongside earlier years in these provisional results but we do consider information to be broadly comparable across the same type of data providers at national level although statistics should still be treated with caution, especially where labelled as experimental. Users should bear in mind that figures may change in the final release of this data.
Please ensure you use these statistics with reference to the Data Quality information provided, particularly noting the 6 trusts that did not provide finalised, signed off data.
On 30th October 2024 it was identified that the figure for Soft FM (Hotel Services) in the National Level Data table in the ERIC Report was incorrectly published as 4,175,298,709. The correct figure is 4,175,077,931. No other tables are affected, and all figures in the site level .csv file remain correct. This error were amended in version 2 of the report, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
