Summary

This publication includes analysis of data for the year April 2023 to March 2024 from the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Enhanced Dataset (SCCI 2026) which is a repository for individual level data collected by healthcare providers in England, including acute hospital providers, mental health providers and GP practices. The report includes data on the type of FGM, age at which FGM was undertaken and in which country, the age of the woman or girl at her latest attendance and if she was advised of the health implications and illegalities of FGM and various other analyses. Some data for earlier years are reported.


Key Facts

There were 6,655 individual[1] women and girls who had an attendance where FGM was identified in the reporting period.

These accounted for 14,355 total attendances[2] reported at NHS trusts and GP practices where FGM was identified.
The number of total attendances during 2023-24 has increased from 12,475 in 2022-23.

From April 2015 to March 2024, 37,615 individual[1] women and girls had a total of 102,155 attendances where FGM was identified.

Information has been reported by NHS trusts and GP practices.

104 NHS trusts and 56 GP practices submitted one or more FGM attendance records during the reporting period.

Since the collection began in April 2015 – FGM attendance records have been submitted from 150 NHS trusts and 282 GP practices.

Definitions

[1] Individuals refers to all patients in the reporting period where FGM was identified or a procedure for FGM was undertaken. Each patient is only counted once.

[2] Total Attendances refers to all attendances in the reporting period where FGM was identified or a procedure for FGM was undertaken. Women and girls may have one or more attendances in the reporting period. This category includes both newly recorded and previously identified women and girls.
