Corrections to percentages of each group of fully qualified female and male GPs joining or leaving during December 2020 to December 2021

The GP Joiners and Leavers Excel tables file was replaced on 30 May 2023 to amend incorrect figures in Table 2b. A formatting error meant the Percentages of each group Joining or Leaving within the time period for females and males were incorrect for both joiners and leavers for December 2020 - December 2021. These errors have been corrected in the replacement file. The all genders figures were unaffected.

Labelling errors in column A of Tables 2a and 2b have also been corrected, by removing the word 'Permanent' to now correctly refer to the applicable group of GPs as Fully Qualified GPs (excludes GPs in Training Grades).

Changes in this series

Tracking GPs into and out of partner and salaried roles

On 24 November 2022 we released the results of some new experimental analysis of general practice workforce data on our supplementary information pages. The aim of the analysis was to explore the path GPs take into and out of partner and salaried roles. Specifically, the analysis attempts to answer the following question:

Over a year consider GP partners and salaried GPs in turn. For GP Partners, count;

  • “Joiners” - People were not a GP but became a GP partner
  • “Movers in”- People who were a GP, but not a GP partner, and became a GP partner (by their previous role type)
  • “Movers out” - People who were a GP partner, and became a GP, but not a GP partner (by their next role type)
  • “Leavers” - People who were a GP partner but stopped being a GP

Repeat the analysis for salaried GPs.

We are now introducing this analysis to this series of Official Statistics on a quarterly basis, starting with this release. Tables are presented in an Excel file, available to download from the Overview page.

Experimental statistics are subject to development. We would be grateful for feedback from users about the new analysis, its usefulness and whether it could be improved. Please email us at: [email protected]

Regional and ICB-level GP joiner and leavers statistics

This release also includes, for the first time, regional and Integrated Care Board-level GP joiner and leaver statistics.  These figures are presented in four CSVs and complement the existing quarterly England-level figures which are presented in Excel tables.

The four CSVs accompanying this release reflect GP joiners and leavers in the year from 31 December 2021 to 31 December 2022. Subsequent periods will be released each quarter, for statistics relating to March, June and September. Two of the files relate to all fully qualified GPs (excludes GPs in training grades) with the remaining two presenting fully qualified permanent GPs (excludes GPs in training grade and locums).

For each group of GPs, one file presents joiners and leavers to/from general practice, broken down at region and ICB level, while the second file presents joiners and leavers to/from each ICB and region (joiners/leavers to from general practice plus movers between ICBs/regions).

Guidance on how to use the files is published alongside them and users are urged to read this guidance to avoid any misinterpretation of the figures.

New job role - dietician

The job role Dietician in the Direct Patient Care staff group is included for the first time in this release, following its introduction to the National Workforce Reporting Service (NWRS) collection tool during December 2022.
