Publication, Part of

General Practice Workforce 31 December 2020

Publication archived

As part of the 31 December 2021 publication, released on 10 February 2022, we introduced a significant methodological change and recalculated and re-published all historical figures back to September 2015, which means that figures in that release differ from and supersede those previously published, including those in this publication.

These pages have been retained in the publication archive for your reference, but the figures presented should no longer be used.

Please see the Methodological Review and Changes page of the December 2021 publication for an explanation of the changes.

Revised headcount and FTE figures by age band for December 2020

The originally published figures for December 2020 in tables 2a and and 2b of the Bulletin Tables file - which present full-time equivalent counts by age band and headcounts by age band respectively - have been revised. This was necessary after a processing error was discovered which meant the ages of some records had been incorrectly calculated, placing some individuals into a lower age band than they should have been based on their age at 31 December 2020.

The Individual and Practice level CSVs have not been updated. We plan to revise them in due curse to reflect the latest CCG structure.

Notice of Changes

Annex B - 'infrequent' locums

The Data Quality - December 2020 page describes the difference in how we collect information about 'infrequent' locums  compared to all other staff roles, including 'regular' locums.

Because infrequent locum headcounts and FTE figures are collected and calculated differently to the rest of the General Practice workforce, we have introduced Annex B to the bulletin, which presents an 'infrequent' locum FTE and headcount time series from March 2019 onwards, along with - for additional context - the numbers of these GPs (by headcount) who also held another role in the General Practice during the applicable period.

We currently publish these long-term and 'infrequent' locum counts together in a single GP Locum category in our bulletin, but plan to report them as 'regular or long-term' and 'ad-hoc or infrequent' locums from March 2021 onwards.

Forthcoming changes

Split of GP Locum job role

To further highlight this difference between how we collect and calculate figures for locums providing planned cover ('regular'  or 'long-term' locums) and those working on a more ad-hoc or short-notice basis ('infrequent' locums), we plan to report these separately in future releases to differentiate between these separate cohorts.

NHS England and NHS Improvement regional restructure

A restructure of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) which will come into effect from 1 April 2021 will be reflected in the breakdowns within the releases from 31 March 2021.

Trainee nurses

Further clarity is planned to the bulletin tables to highlight which sub-group of nurses include trainee nurses.

Changes to publication CSV documents

We are continually working to improve our publication to ensure the components are as useful and relevant as possible for our users. Currently, we are reviewing the contents of the General Practice Workforce series, to rationalise the content of the files produced and identify areas for improvement.

The final stage of our review will consider the CSV files, and any feedback you can provide on which of their data items (columns) you find useful and which you do not need would be appreciated. In addition, we will be reviewing the CSV file names and welcome any suggestions to help us clarify their contents.

Feedback

We welcome your feedback on this publication and our planned changes. You can get in touch with us by email at [email protected]. Please include "GP Workforce publication review" in the subject line of your email.
