Publication, Part of

General Practice Workforce - 31 March 2020

Publication archived

As part of the 31 December 2021 publication, released on 10 February 2022, we introduced a significant methodological change and recalculated and re-published all historical figures back to September 2015, which means that figures in that release differ from and supersede those previously published, including those in this publication.

These pages have been retained in the publication archive for your reference, but the figures presented should no longer be used.

Please see the Methodological Review and Changes page of the December 2021 publication for an explanation of the changes.

Notice of Changes

New Bulletin Tables

We are continually working to improve our publication to ensure the components are as useful and relevant as possible for our users. Following consultation with our stakeholders we have agreed the first change that will focus on the production of a new consistent, standard Bulletin Tables document that will form the core of the General Practice Workforce publication.

In the publications concerning March and September's data it will replace the existing Bulletin Tables document and continue to be accompanied by the other Detailed and Supplementary Tables. In the publications focusing on June and December's data it will replace the four current high-level staff group documents, removing the inconsistencies between these and the current Bulletin document, and ensuring that users can track the same key time series across all four quarterly publications in this series.

The new Bulletin document will debut in the next publication, of June 2020 figures, and will contain the following Full-time equivalent (FTE), Headcount and other figures:

Subject Breakdowns Measures Coverage
General Practice Staff by Gender and staff group and role FTE and Headcount England, September 2015 to present
General Practice Staff

by Ageband and staff group for all, and role for GPs only

FTE and Headcount England, September 2015 to present
General Practice Staff Work Commitment and staff group for all, by gender for GPs only Headcount England, September 2015 to present
General Practitioners only Country of Qualification by role category Headcount England, September 2015 to present
General Practices Number of GP Practices and Patients Counts England, September 2015 to present
General Practices FTEs per 100,000 patients, by staff group for all FTE England, September 2015 to present
General Practice Staff by staff group and role FTE and Headcount

by NHS England and Improvement (NHSEI) region, Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) and Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Latest reporting period only

General Practice Staff by staff group and role FTE and Headcount by Health Education England (HEE) region, only if their alignment with the NHSEI regions is delayed, with the expectation that they will be phased out when this alignment comes into place. Latest reporting period only

We welcome feedback from all our users on this change and ask that you provide any feedback by Friday 26 June 2020 to enable it to be incorporated into a review of the new Bulletin tables file, we are also happy to provide more detail on the above where requested. You can get in touch with us at [email protected] and please include "GP Workforce Bulletin review" in the subject line of your email.
