Summary Reports - IMD and Ethnicity

A&E attendances by Index of Multiple Deprivation and rate per 100,000 population

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is a measure of relative deprivation for small areas (Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs). It is a combined measure of deprivation based on a total of 37 separate indicators that have been grouped into seven domains, each of which reflects a different aspect of deprivation experienced by individuals living in an area.

People residing in the ‘most deprived 10%’ areas in England have the largest number of attendances at A&E departments with just over 3.0 million in 2021-22.

This group also has the highest rate of attendances with just under 53,900 attendances for every 100,000 people.

The ‘least deprived 10%’ have the lowest number of attendances (just over 1.5 million) and a rate of attendances around half that of the ‘most deprived 10%’ with just over 28,400 attendances for every 100,000 people.

Excludes attendances where the IMD is unknown.

A&E attendances by Ethnicity and rate per 100,000 population

Just under 80 per cent of A&E attendances (where the patients ethnicity is known) are for those with an ethnic group of White.

The lowest rate of attendances with 29,000 attendances for every 100,000 people is for those with an ethnic group of Mixed.

Other ethnic groups have a rate that is just under 3 times higher with a rate of 82,000 attendances for every 100,000 people.

Excludes attendances where the ethnicity is unknown.
