FAEs by admission method, 2010-11 to 2020-21

In this chart FAEs have been indexed to 2010-11 levels, showing relative growth rates of emergency and elective admissions.

In 2020-21, Emergency admissions have seen a proportionately smaller reduction than Elective admissions, as routine care was delayed or cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Elective and emergency admissions by month, 2020-21

This monthly breakdown shows the impact of the first lockdown on elective admissions per month (previously around 740K, per month).

The number of emergency admissions was more stable during the year, although activity levels were lowest during the first lockdown period.


Admission method by IMD decile, 2020-21

We can see in this chart that emergency admissions were more common in the more deprived decile groups  compared with the less deprived groups.

 


Elective wait by commissioning region, 2020-21

The mean waiting time for an elective admission was 77 days; this is 17 days longer than the mean waiting time in 2019-20.

An average of 93 per cent of admissions had a wait of under 9 months across all regions, down from 98 per cent in 2019-20.
