Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of June 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,620 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,015 admissions and 1,205 discharges. 85% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 259,445 referrals¹ for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,400 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 545 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
  • 145 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (30%) were aged between 25-34 (1,075).
  • The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (140).
  • 70% were male (2,525) and 30% were female (1,080).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,475 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,415, 41%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,320, 38%).
  • 2,075 (60%) were in a non-secure setting². 1,290 (37%) were in a secure setting.
  • 585 (17%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 485 patients were restrained at least once.
