Learning Disability Services Monthly Statistics AT: December 2020, MHSDS: October 2020 Final

Data collected at the end of December 2020 show that:

• 2,055 inpatients were in hospital at the end of the reporting period. 
• More inpatients were discharged (115) than admitted (70) to hospitals. Out of the 115 inpatients who were discharged/transferred from hospital in December 2020, 80 (69%) were discharged back into the community. 
• Many inpatients have been in hospital for a long time. Of those in hospital at the end of December 2020, 1,215 (59%) had a total length of stay of over 2 years. 
• Around half of inpatients (1,085, 53%) were in a non-secure ward. There were 975 (47%) inpatients in a secure ward. 
• The largest proportion of inpatients (30%) were aged between 25-34 (610) and the lowest proportion (2%) were aged 65 and over (40). 
• In line with previous months trends, there were more males (1,460) than females (590) in hospital this month (71% were male). 
• There were 70 admissions to hospital; of these 35 were first admissions, 20 were re-admissions within a year of the previous discharge and 15 were transfers from other hospitals. 
• Over a third of inpatients (37%) last had a review of their care over 6 months ago (755 people). 
• Under half of inpatients (49%) have a date planned for them to leave hospital (1,015). 

At the end of October 2020 (based on hospital spells data):

• There were 3,305 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
• There were 1,270 admissions and 1,310 discharges. 88% of these were discharged back into the community.
• There were 234,190 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

• 1,275 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
• There are 500 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
• 110 (3%) had a delayed discharge.
• The largest proportion (29%) were aged between 25-34 (970).
• The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (150).
• 70% were male (2,300) and 30% were female (990).  

Findings based on ward stays data:

• There were 3,265 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
• The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,420, 43%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,390, 43%).
• 2,000 (61%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,175 (36%) were in a secure setting
• 475 (14%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
• 425 patients were restrained at least once.
